Rich Mullins was one of the strongest lyricist and most innovative Christian singer/songwriters in contemporary Christian music. He was honest with his struggles, and by facing them, he demonstrated God’s love, grace, and strength.
This painting is based off of Michael Wilson’s iconic album cover for Rich’s 1993 album, “A Liturgy, a Legacy, & a Ragamuffin Band.” The album cover shows a cropped version of the photo from Rich’s shoulders down to his hands. In the uncropped photo, Rich’s facial expression appears as if he needs reassurance, or as if he is standing in the bitter cold. I painted him more as a fiery old-testament prophet, or an only tamed by God John the Baptist. The form is somewhat elongated reminiscent of icons.
